How to Select Steel Materials for Fabrication Work

Gates, grills, sheds and frames each need different sections. Here's how to think about shape, size, thickness and finish.

Fabrication work — gates, grills, sheds, racks, frames and furniture — uses a different set of steel products than RCC construction. Choosing the right sections makes the job stronger, easier and more economical.

Know what the item has to do

Start with the job:

  • Does it carry load? A shed frame or mezzanine is structural and should be designed by an engineer.
  • Is it mostly decorative or protective? Grills and railings need rigidity and a good finish more than high load capacity.
  • Will it be outdoors? Plan for painting or other corrosion protection.

Choose the right shape

Angles

Good for frames, brackets, racks and gate outlines. Easy to cut and weld.

Channels

Stiffer than angles of similar size; used for heavier frames, supports and purlins.

Pipes and hollow sections

Round pipes suit railings and handrails; square and rectangular sections give clean lines for gates and furniture.

Sheets and plates

Sheets for door panels, shutters and covers; plates for base plates, brackets and stiffeners.

Flats and rods

Flat bars and square or round rods are used for grill patterns and decorative work.

Size and thickness

The size (for example, the leg length of an angle) and the thickness together decide the strength and weight of a section. Thicker is stronger but heavier and costlier. For anything load-bearing, follow the engineer's design; for non-structural work, an experienced fabricator can advise.

Workability

Mild steel (MS) is popular for fabrication because it cuts, bends and welds easily. Ask your fabricator about the welding method and finish they plan to use.

Plan cutting and wastage

Most sections come in standard lengths. Plan your cutting list to reduce off-cuts and make sure the quantity you buy covers the whole job.

Finishing and protection

Clean off mill scale and rust before painting, use a good primer and paint suitable for the location.
