Things to Check Before Buying Steel Bars

Markings, size, weight, surface condition and paperwork — a quick checklist to use before you accept a steel delivery.

Steel bars are a large part of a building's cost and an even larger part of its safety. A few simple checks at the time of purchase can save money and trouble later.

1. Confirm the grade and diameter

Compare what you are buying with what your structural drawing specifies. Check both the grade (for example Fe 500 or Fe 500D) and the diameter in millimetres for each lot.

2. Look at the markings on the bar

Branded reinforcement bars usually carry rolled-in markings along their length, such as the brand name, grade and sometimes the size. Make sure the markings match the bill and what you asked for.

3. Check the weight

Bars are normally sold by weight, so weigh the material and match it with the bill. A widely used approximation for the weight of a round bar is:

Weight (kg per metre) ≈ D² ÷ 162, where D is the diameter in mm.

For example, a 12 mm bar weighs roughly 0.89 kg per metre. Large differences from the expected weight are worth asking about.

4. Inspect the surface

  • A thin layer of light surface rust is common and usually not a concern
  • Heavy, flaking rust, deep pitting or cracks are not acceptable
  • Bars should be straight (or properly coiled for smaller sizes) and not badly bent or damaged

5. Ask for documents

Ask for a proper bill. For structural work, your engineer may also ask for the manufacturer's test certificate for the batch — check with your supplier whether it can be provided.

6. Count and measure

Check the number of bars and their length against your order. Standard lengths are common, but confirm this when ordering.

7. Plan safe storage on site

Store bars off the ground on wooden blocks, keep different diameters separate and cover them to reduce rusting during the monsoon.
