Prices move with the market, rates can be per kg or per piece, and timing and storage matter. A practical buying checklist.
Beyond choosing the right product, a few practical points can make your iron and steel purchase smoother.
Prices change frequently
Steel prices move with raw-material costs and market demand, sometimes week to week. This is why many suppliers do not publish fixed price lists. Always ask for the current rate on the day you plan to buy.
Understand how the rate is quoted
- Per kg or per tonne — common for TMT bars and structural steel
- Per piece or per length — sometimes used for pipes and certain sections
- Per sheet — sometimes used for sheets and plates
When comparing quotes, make sure you are comparing the same basis, the same grade or brand, and whether taxes are included.
Ask for a proper bill
A bill records what you bought — product, size, grade, quantity and rate — and is useful for your project records.
Time your purchase with the work
Buying everything far in advance means storing steel on site for months, which increases the risk of rusting and loss. Coordinate deliveries with your contractor's schedule where possible.
Plan transport and unloading
Long bars and sections need suitable transport and space for unloading. Ask your supplier about transport options, and plan where the material will be kept on site.
Store it properly
- Keep steel off the ground on blocks or racks
- Cover it during rain
- Keep sizes separate and labelled
